As the wooden handles are a natural product, the graining and colour of the wood can differ slightly from that shown. We have included an additional image to demonstrate some of the possible variances in the wood graining and staining - and this can be quite varied with olive . Also whilst we try hard to protect the wood from any damage, as they are commercially manufactured wooden handles they may occasionally have small dents, scratches or dings in the handle - though this obviously doesn't impact performance and if any are noticeable then we can provide advice on adjusting the mounting and minimising the visibility of them.
NOTE: If you're ejecting your spent pucks directly into the waste (bin/can/garbage), then with any portafilter you may well find that the basket exits as well. We would always advocate the use of a proper "knock box" to ensure that this doesn't happen - whereby the basket is pushed into the portafilter whilst the spent puck is ejected, and there is no risk of loosing the basket from the portafilter,
Olive wood care and maintenance: Most of our wooden products have a varnished finished, though the olive wood products are special and have an oiled finish - which typically requires periodic maintenance in order to enhance the appearance and feel of the grain, prevent any issues with cracking and increases the longevity of the wood. As required, the olive wood should be lightly reoiled with food grade mineral oil (not olive oil or vegetable oil as this won't usually dry) - we find that very lightly sanding the handle with a very fine sandpaper before applying oil can also help the oil to be absorbed and makes the surface super-smooth after application. Ensure the wood is dry and dust free by rubbing with a dry cloth, and then simply pour a little food grade mineral oil onto a cloth and rub this into the surface of the wood, leave it to dry for 10-15 minutes, the reapply - and after a further 15 minutes use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any excess oil. That's it!
I bought this olive handled portafilter and also the olive steam knob. They're both fantastic - they look and feel great, with beautiful grain and I was surprised how the appearance has improved as I oiled them a bit more after having them for a few days - so thats a good tip. It fits the classic well, feels very solid and well made and works with my VST and IMS baskets. Delivery to me in New York was surprisingly quick by mail, and packing was great too. I'll be sure to come back for a Topbox PID kit and gauge soon. Thanks for evrything you guys do, and keep up the good work.
I enjoyed the filter basket, but the handle itself and the customer support was disappointing to say the least. The handle fastens onto the basket via a metal-on-wood dowel screw, which immediately stripped itself upon initial assembly. When I asked for an exchange or a refund I was told simply to fix it myself. [SoC]Thanks for your review Patrick. After you contacted us about stripping the wood within the handle (which is usually due to over-tightening) we suggested to you that the easiest/quickest fix was to simply glue the metal dowel screw back into place. As you expressed a desire not to do this, we agreed to send you a replacement handle - and did so around 10 days ago. You should have received this by now, though as your review doesn't mention it, if you haven't had it yet then please reach out on chat and we'll help further.
This Italian olive wood bottomless portafilter is absolutely beautiful. Gorgeous workmanship and finish. Of course, I also purchased the olive wood steam knob to go along with…. Looks so good on my “Industrial Grey” Gaggia Classic Evo Pro! Thanks, Shades of Coffee! (I’ll probably be back for the PID kit!)
I ordered the Italian Olive Wood bottomless portafilter with the matching steam nob. They look fantastic and the wood feels amazing. Well crafted & solidly built and I am able to fit my 18g VST basket. The fit is a little tight for both the basket and the nob, but's to be expected, as things will lose up a bit with time. The order came well packed and the delivery was super fast as well. Thank you Shades Of Coffee . Great doing business with you.

Just received this yesterday ( I'm in Australia) Used it for the first time today and when I went to remove it from the group head the wood handle almost came off in my hand. There is a threaded dowel which is just screwed into the wood without any metal screw insert. It simply strips out of the wood. I have emailed the company and wait for a reply. [SoC comment] Obviously it's always disappointing when customers have problems with any of our products; and this problem is usually caused by overtightening of the handle when fitting it - which strips the wood inside the handle. We've responded to your email and advised how to easily fix this, and also offered to provide a new handle, which you've accepted and which was sent out yesterday.
