This stamped basket is essentially the same basic design as our Shades49 CNC machined stepdown basket, though is stamped from a single piece of stainless steel and has 629 traditionally stamped holes in the bottom.

The 49mm stepdown basket has become a very popular option for many other espresso machines over recent months.  We've tried a few of them, and have been somewhat disappointed that many of the currently available stepdown baskets don't fit many of the common Gaggia bottomless portafilters (obviously, due to the depth of stepdown baskets, none will fit a spouted portafilter).

Some of our customers initially asked us if we had any portafilters that these baskets (Sworks, Graph, etc.) would happily fit into - and after trying them we found that we didn't have any.  It seems that other stepdown basket manufacturers have simply forgotten about testing the fit of these baskets with Gaggia portafilters.  

We therefore decided to solve the problem in a different way...

We've decided to design and develop our own "Shades49" stepdown basket, that WILL work with all common 58mm portafilters across various different machines.  Importantly for Gaggia users, it fits our Italian brass bottomless portafilters, our stainless steel bottomless portafilters and our OEM Gaggia bottomless portafilters.

We've been using prototypes of the Shades49 for a few months - and we love the resultant espresso, as well as the ease with which it can be made (we've found almost no need to use WDT or shaking at all).

We're also making a number of 49mm basket accessories available for use with the Shades49 stepdown basket.

During our use of all stepdown baskets we've found that the following accessories are mandatory for clean knock-out, and good results:

  • Dynamic shower screen spring

So we have decided to very cost-effectively bundle both of these within our Shades49 stepdown basket bundle.

You'll also need a 49.5mm tamper, and optionally a 58mm-49mm dosing funnel.

Other Specifications:

If you intend using other bottomless portafilters with the Shades49 basket, then ensure that the opening at the bottom of the portafilter will accommodate a basket diameter of approx 52mm. We know (for example) that a standard Londinium bottomless portafilter has the hole cut too small.
