We've custom designed these Extended MAX slim or shallow drip trays, and are having them vacuum moulded in thick and durable black ABS plastic.

This drip tray differs from the normal slim drip tray that we sell in so far as there is a 40mm extension on the front of it which we use to expand the water capacity of the tray - and the front panel is also deeper (so that it sits on the counter-top).  This design was created and the product produced in response to customers asking for a deeper drip tray with such an extension, so that they could more easily place weighing scales on the drip tray.  We've now enhanced this design to include the larger water capacity and necessary larger metal grate.

As opposed to our Extended drip tray and Slim drip tray, the Extended MAX drip tray has a larger water capacity and uses a much a larger 304 stainless steel grate.  The included grate is optionally available in either brushed or mirror finish stainless steel.

As they are shallower than the original, at 25mm high - which is around 30mm lower than the original drip-tray, we are also supplying a custom stainless steel vent tube (6mm OD, 0.5mm walls, just like the original - but better quality and with a quality stainless finish rather than chrome) that is longer (158mm) so that it reaches just above the drip tray perfectly.   This longer vent tube is also available on its own from us here.

This single tray design has been made to fit all models of Classic as well as possible. The image gallery shows the drip tray in use within a Classic Pro.

These trays are made for us by a UK plastics moulding company to our design and specification.

Unlike 3D printed drip trays, these drip trays are very durable - being manufactured from ABS with a textured finish on the top surfaces and a smooth finish on the underside.  Having tested these drip trays along with the standard Gaggia tray, and various 3D printed drip trays (including ones made from PLA, PLA+ and PETG) the difference in temperature resistance is significant - with these and the original Gaggia drip tray easily being able to take multiple trips through a domestic dishwasher = whereas the 3D printed parts suffered in a number of ways (including warping, flexing and delamination of the layers).

The approximate water capacity of a standard Classic drip tray is 550ml; our Extended slim drip trays hold 225ml (41% of original capacity, and the same as our Slim drip trays), whereas this Extended MAX drip tray holds 385ml - 71% more than the regular Extended/slim drip tray, and 70% of the capacity of the original Classic drip tray.

NOTE that due to the laser cutting process used to manufacture the stainless steel grates, it is possible for rust marks to develop on the underside of the grate during early use.  This is caused by the vapourised steel around the holes covering the underside of the tray, and if surface rusting occurs it can be easily polished/scoured off and it won't reappear as it is simply a light surface covering.  The grates themselves are 1mm thick 304 stainless steel.

This product contains:

  • Deeper slim drip tray, 25mm high (by 194mm wide and 160mm deep) and vacuum moulded in black ABS
  • Supplied with larger stainless steel grate (optionally mirror or brushed finished)
  • Custom 6mm OD x 0.5mm walls (5mm ID) stainless steel vent tube, 158mm long

Gaggia are having a laugh: with the regular spouted PF and factory drip-tray you can barely fit any vessel between the two, let alone if you wanted scales. Adding this to my machine along with a bottomless PF has opened space to get a scale and a cortado glass in there. The finish on the plastic is textured--almost like leather--which *is* visible in the gallery images, but I hadn't noticed that before purchase. Not an issue, was just unexpected when I unpacked them. That said, from any distance beyond real up-close you don't notice it. I got the float to go with my tray as even though this is the biggest of the slims, at 70% of the original tray's capacity that is still a reduction and want to know before I make a mess all over my counter/floor. Might be nice to see the float included though as don't know who *wouldn't* want one in their tray. The longer vent tube is included though and was super easy to replace. The tolerances on this are tight and slides right in as a replacement to the original. The grate is an excellent fit on the top and also has a really precise finish to all the cutting. It was nice to have a choice between brushed and mirror finish too. If somebody not familiar with the GCP saw this replacement setup they'd never know it wasn't stock. This hasn't proven to be an issue, but this tray definitely slides out with less resistance than the original. There are some little rubber "feet" facing up inside the GCP that this tray rests on but they don't seem to offer any actual stickiness, which feels different to the factory tray. I've found this is only an issue if you move the whole machine as the drip-tray might not go with it as you expect, so if you do that just ensure it is properly seated again afterwards. Overall really impressed with this setup and has definitely improved my workflow and the handling of the GCP. Don't debate it, get one!
