Shades of Coffee RainFlow Dispersion Plate
NOW AVAILABLE
We have designed and developed an innovative high performance and high flow dispersion plate for the Gaggia Classic that provides MUCH better water flow and dispersion onto the shower-screen than any other Classic dispersion plate.
The RainFlow dispersion plate features:
- High performance, high flow and market leading water distribution above the shower screen
- Lead-free brass or 304 stainless steel construction
- Innovative two piece design, with complex internal water galleries and a perimeter sealing silicone o-ring between the two parts
- Initially it splits the single incoming water stream into six equal streams
- Further splitting each of the six streams into eight or nine individual streams distributed across the surface of the plate, for a total of 50 outlet holes above the shower screen.
These two comparison images below show the typical flow from the RainFlow (left) and standard stainless steel (right) dispersion plates - WITHOUT a shower screen. The RainFlow dispersion plate is a direct replacement for the original aluminium dispersion plate in earlier Gaggia Classic (and similar) machines, and also for any stainless steel or brass dispersion plates used in later Gaggia Classic machines. These original dispersion plates typically have four large outlet holes, and work reasonably well - though due to the design and single incoming water stream (on the left of the group) the two holes on the left are favoured and have higher water flow than the two on the right (this can be seen in the image below right, as the two left streams are solid columns whereas drops are appearing from the two on the right). You can view a slow-mo video of the flow from the RainFlow dispersion plate by clicking on the YouTube icon above.

(our apologies for the pink lighting on this machine - we like it!)
The two original dispersion plate retaining screws are used to mount and hold the RainFlow plate in place, and also to clamp the two parts firmly together. Any standard M5 shower screen mounting screw (the original one or our hex head one for example) can be used to hold a shower screen within the plate.
Hence the RainFlow dispersion plate is available for upgrading any Classic and other Gaggia domestic or commercial machines that use the current dispersion plate and also have a solenoid valve, such as:
- Any Gaggia Classic (other than RI9403) - yes, including the original Classic, Evo, Pro, E24, etc.
- Gaggia Baby
- Gaggia New Baby
- Gaggia New Baby 06 Class
- Gaggia Baby Twin
This version is not compatible with the Gaggia Classic GT model - though we have an alternative version available here that is.
This dispersion plate is NOT suitable for any machine that has a brew valve mounted in the centre of the dispersion plate or boiler (eg Gaggia Coffee or Classic RI9403).
It can be used with any Gaggia Classic compatible shower screen, including:
- Gaggia OEM standard shower screen (works very well with a clean screen, with all holes clear)
- IMS GA-200IM precision shower screen (works well)
- IMS GA-200NT precision nanotec coated shower screen (works well)
- IMS Mesh nanotec coated shower screen (works very well)
- IMS Mesh shower screen (has smaller / less holes than the above one, which are more centralised - hence above is better)
Due to increased thermal conductivity and in order to complement the other brass group (and now boiler) components within the modern Gaggia Classic, the RainFlow dispersion plate is available in lead-free brass, and optionally also in 304 stainless steel (though due to the significant additional manufacturing time they are more expensive).
The RainFlow brass dispersion plate weighs approximately 220g, and the stainless steel one weighs approximately 211g. Other than the material that they are made from, the two versions are identical.
The RainFlow design is a protected design under UK IPO registration 6427580
Our Shower-screen silicone gasket set works well with RainFlow - and allows you to experiment with 51.5mm shower screens, as well as with regular Classic (54.5/55mm) ones. Order a RainFlow and a shower screen gasket set to automatically receive 25% discount on the gasket set.
This product contains:
- RainFlow upper section (smaller diameter / thinner) in lead-free brass or 304 stainless steel
- RainFlow lower section (larger diameter / thicker) in lead-free brass or 304 stainless steel
- O-ring: BS032 Red Silicone FDA O Ring. 47.35mm ID x 1.78mm CS
Firstly; ordered yesterday, received today. A definite win situation. I have over time been upgrading my Classic 2019 Acrobat when needed. When the boiler needed replacing I bought the brass version along with the brass group head. When the steam valve was constantly leaking I bought the Shades rebuildable version. Sometimes an upgrade wasn’t needed but I did it anyway - shower screen, IMS basket - and the dispersion plate was the same. Not needed but wanted. Upon opening the package I was drawn to how beautifully the plate had been machined and there was a spiral swirl which was very aesthetically pleasing. The instructions on the Shades video were great as my initial way of putting things together - typical bloke - would have been wrong. When installed with a new group gasket it looked amazing (a shame that the shower screen eventually hides it). I then turned the machine on, let it heat up and turned the water flow on. Amazing!!!! Full water dispersion across the whole plate. Shower screen installed
Bought one of the first batch, just after Easter. Delivery was quick and installation relatively easy if you follow the video. Keeping the silicone seal in place can be a bit tricky whilst trying to line up the bolt holes, especially as it is not easy to see given the location. Water flow is definitely improved and has gone someway to removing the 'left spout bias' which has always been a problem with the Gaggia. Talking to Adrian about this following installation, other factors can also affect even flow through both spouts, including shower screen and the machining of the spouts themselves, but overall I feel it's a worthwhile upgrade.

At first I was satisfied with the product but while cleaning I noticed a flaw and that is the alignment of the two parts during assembly. The water drips evenly and really gives a "rain flow" effect but only when the two elements are maximally aligned (this can be noticed during assembly before you start screwing in the second screw). It would be good if there were for example two "protrusions" on one part and "recesses" on the other part or something similar that would align both parts 100% when screwing in the screws. This would make assembly much easier
